Project Whisper
The city bus technology of the future
The first Whisper bus equipped with TheWheel™ SM500/3 motors
e-Traction implemented the e-Traction system with TheWheel™ SM500/3 motors in conventional city buses. This has several advantages for inner city public transport.
Advantages of the Whisper
- The Whisper is 90% more silent than conventional city buses
- A reduction of 50% in the emission
- A reduced fuel consumption of 50%
Phase of Project - 65% completion
In close cooperation with the municipality Apeldoorn, Veolia, province of Gelderland, the Dutch government and Eneco five buses are currently being converted into Whisper buses. The project started in December 2008 and is now in full swing.
The first bus has been delivered and is in daily operation. See also the news item about the first Whisper bus. The second bus is in the process of completion and will soon be delivered.
What makes the Whisper a revolutionary bus concept
As with all vehicles equipped by e-Traction, TheWheel™ in-wheel motors are installed as traction system. Using this technology an enormous reduction in energy consumption has already been achieved. For more information see our TheWheel overview section
Batteries
The next step in transition is adding an energy buffer. As described in the e-Traction system section Li-Ion batteries are installed. The capacity of this buffer allows zero-emission electric driving up to one hour of operation.
Generator
A well designed buffer allows the use of a smaller power source. Every Whisper bus is equipped with a small diesel generator. Its size is comparable to a small SUV motor as is its fuel consumption.
