Project Mercedes G

Conversion of a passenger car into a hybrid vehicle

Our Wheel motor technology fits well in large applications - citybusses are good application example. However, our technology is also suitable for cars.
The aim of the 'Mercedes Gelände project' is to equip a passenger car with wheel motor technology - and test a new design of small generator.
For this purpose, a Mercedes Gelände was completely disassembled and rebuilt with The Wheel technology to make it electrically powered.

The vehicle's maiden voyage was filmed on a rainy August day (other movies can be found after display by inserting keyword e-Traction)

Status of the project

The Mercedes G project is currently completed for 70%. e-Traction is now working on reinstalling the interior of the car. The project is expected to be finished in two months.

Advantages

Equipping the passenger car with wheel motors has the advantage of zero emission when driving in the city. For longer distances between cities a range extender is installed on the Mercedes.

The almost finished Mercedes G

Technology

Two TheWheel™ motors have been installed on the chassis which will be powered by several battery units. These can be charged by a small Wankel engine.

Because of the new traction system installed on the Mercedes G it has not only become environmentally friendly, it has also become cheaper to operate thanks to dramatic fuel cuts and savings in both maintenance time and costs. The direct-drive system contains only a few moving parts, making it not only easier for maintenance, but also way more efficient, and when something happens to breakdown, it can be replaced quickly thanks to the modular design of the system. The film below shows this unique traction solution in action.
